Patrick McCarthy of Dalton, Ohio, has won 35 individual and team trophies at Grand Americans from 1988 to 2010. He was Doubles champion in 2005 plus 2000 George McCarty Handicap winner and 2009 Parliament Coach Handicap titlist, all after 100 straights. In addition to his two top handicap awards, he has collected 15 place or yardage-group trophies, including three in President’s events and eighth place in the 2005 GAH.

During Grand competition he has posted a total of fourteen 200s in singles (including perfect scores in all three 200-target events in 2008), the two 100s from the 27, and thirteen 100s in doubles. In 1993 he hit 100 twins three times, collecting the Class contest’s AA title (then the event’s top award), runnerup in the championship race, and AA honors on a prelim day. Two years later he secured AA second place in the class event following another 100.

In 2000 he carded a second-high 972x1,000, good for the AAA High-Over-All trophy, while his 397x400 ranked third in the 2005 All-Around and won him class runnerup honors.

Pat has been doubles champion at three Satellite Grand Americans: Northeastern, 1987; Dixie, 1995; and Great Lakes, 1997. He was also 1987 Northeastern Grand all-around titlist. He has earned numerous additional trophies at those tournaments plus the Southern, Southwestern and Spring Grands.

Eight Ohio titles between 1988 and 1999 are in his collection: the 1995 singles for 200; 1988 handicap; three doubles, with the 1992 and 1997 for 100 straights; and three all-around. In Central Zone competition, he has captured the 1990 handicap, the 1997 doubles with 100, and the all-around crowns both those years. His 397x400 the latter time tied the zone record.

From 1987 to 2010, McCarthy has earned positions on 20 ATA All-American squads, including first teams from 1991 to 1994 then again in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2007. He has logged nine years of 99% or higher singles averages from 1997 to 2009.

Between 1982 and June 2011, he has registered approximately 415,000 targets. Pat is one of a select few to complete his career ATA Grand Slam (200 in a 200-bird singles event, 100 from 27 yards, and 100 in doubles) in less than one year. On Aug. 4, 1985, he ran 100 doubles for the first time, and he entered both his first 200 in singles and the first of an eventual five career 100s from the 27 on June 19, 1986, during the Ohio State Shoot.

Since 1991 he has worked in his in-laws’ shooting supply business, Dawson Enterprises. McCarthy developed and holds patents on the Stock Lock System™ recoil reduction device. He also developed a release trigger for the Blaser line of shotguns.
