Trapshooting has been an
integral part of the New York Athletic Club for over 130 years and the
Amateur Championship of America at Clay Targets has been a coveted prize
awarded by the Club for close to 100 years. The first NYAC trapshooting
championship started in 1905. When you mention the NYAC you must acknowledge
trapshooting legends like Roger Fawcett, Happy Felton, Nick Egan and Ben
Higginson who helped run this shoot for decades.
In all, 13 Hall of Famers
grace the list of past champions. The coveted Championship of
America at Clay Targets has been won 11 Hall of Famers including Steve Crothers (5 times),
George McCarty
(4 times), Joe Hiestand (3 times), Walter Beaver (3
times), Charlie Newcomb (twice), Frank Little (twice), George
Lyon, Hugh McKinley, Gerald Russo, David
George and Frank Wright.
MD Clark (three
times) and Dan Orlich have won Doubles titles. Hall of Famer
George, Little, McKinley, Beaver, Hiestand, Crothers, Russo are all
former Doubles title holders. Richard Baldwin, former HOF museum
director won the Handicap in 1952.
The last years of the NYAC
were held at the NYSATA in Cicero, NY. The last tournament was held in
2004. It became the victim of the many ATA Satellite Grand now held in
many parts of the country.
The HOF has in it's
collections many artifacts from the old NYAC including the wonderful set
of gold, silver and precious gem medals
awarded to Ben Higginson.
