Jim W. Hunter,
Gerald Russo and Harold Smith Sr. will be the
2008 Trapshooting Hall of Fame inductees at the 2008 Hall of Fame banquet held during the Grand American at Sparta,
IL., in August, 2008. |
Jim Hunter, who now resides in Sparks, Nev., was named to 21 All-American teams from sub-junior to industry captain placements, starting in 1959 and continuing until 1983. During this time he captured 52 Grand American trophies. Jimmy's first 100 straight in handicap came when he was 11 years old, at the Oregon State Shoot. At age 15 he became the second junior in history on the 27-yard line. The Federal rep began his run of industry teams in 1968 and captained them four times, beginning in 1978.
Gerald Russo, from Saddle River, N.J., placed on 10 All-American teams in a 21-year span, from 1977 to 1997. During Grand American activity from 1974 to 2002, he collected 22 individual awards and 15 team awards, including record-breaking Brother-Brother honors with Larry. Gerry was Ail-Around champion in 1979 and
runner up in 1995. He also was third in the High-Over-All in 1993. He has accumulated numerous championships in New Jersey, Eastern Zone and Satellite Grand competitions.
In 1950 Harold S. Smith Sr. and his father and brother purchased the Jabberwock Gun Club in Reno, Nev., and transformed it into Harolds Trapshooting Country Club. Harold was instrumental in holding the first Golden West Grand American in 1952, opening up the West to its initial major trapshooting championship. From the 1950s and into the 1960s, the Golden West was second only in attendance, monies and prizes to the Grand American in Vandalia, Ohio. Harold was the first to introduce gold-coin belt buckles as sought-after trophies,
and he was a driving force in implementing the 27-yard line. For
four years, from 1956 through 1959, he served as Nevada's ATA
Delegate. Smith will be inducted posthumously.
